To: Players, Coaches and Parents, From:
Steve Zawrotny, MS, CSCS No doubt you've heard something about MLB and their steroid scandal. What is less widely known is that there are a number of highly effective supplements and nutritional products available that can safely boost performance in ballplayers who are also reasonably careful with their diet. But I have to tell you, the current news about Major League Baseball and steroid use really has me steamed. Why? Because the question I hear most from young ball players is this: "My coach (or a scout) tells me I have to get bigger. How do I do that?" The players who ask me this question have the benefit of my providing them with safe and appropriate guidance. But merely "getting bigger" won't help your game much, especially if you go about it the wrong way. Here's a letter from the father of a player who is doing things the right way:
This young pitcher also has several D-1 scholarship offers. His future is bright! But what about the many who feel the need and urgency to "get bigger" yet don't have access to correct information? THESE are the guys I especially feel badly for, because they're more likely to operate on false and perhaps even dangerous information. And what do these young players see from the big-leaguers they look up to? Huge guys hitting home runs or firing overpowering fastballs and signing mega-million dollar contracts. The result is increasing numbers of "sold out" young ball players with misconceptions about what it takes to compete at the highest levels of the game. Ball players, especially young ball players, need to read this statement from the 4/03/06 issue of Sports Illustrated, p. 43: "Managers and players have speculated that ridding baseball of amphetamines, the popular clubhouse pick-me-ups to endure the grinding schedule and boozy late nights, will further increase the importance of younger, fitter players." So the tide may be changing, and now is the time for ball players to do what they can to enhance their strength and conditioning, naturally. All of which leads us to my main point, that ball players do have alternatives to dangerous and illegal drugs - alternatives that can safely help them to perform at a high level! Metabolic and energy system demands vary from sport to sport. The strength, conditioning and skill work you do as a ball player prepares you for your game. These activities are, of course, different from those done in other sports. But did you know your nutritional requirements as baseball and softball athletes also differ from other sports? Nutritional Advice From Experts Who Know Baseball & Softball I've spent the past 30+ years as a coach and player, from Little League through NCAA D-1. EQUIPMENT, How Can Nutritional Specialization Help You? PREPARING TO PERFORM is a four-fold approach:
All four are strongly INTER-RELATED. Slipping in one area will negatively affect the others. And while the concept of "eating" for your sport might seem new, all things being equal, the player who properly meets their nutritional requirements will have an important advantage over those who don't! Don't misunderstand my message - you cannot transform your game with a magic pill or powder. As I stated above, nutrition and supplementation are but one facet of your overall preparation. Proper eating habits are the foundation of not only your on-field performance, but your overall health. Supplements will not make up for a poor diet! But for the player who has been eating properly and needs more help in gaining size and strength, appropriate use of supplements can make a great difference.
